Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the questions we get asked the most about MSP.

When Will I Receive My MSP Exam Results?

Foundation Exam Results

If you have taken MSP Foundation, your exam will be marked by the trainer immediately following the exam and the provisional results are available within an hour.

Practitioner Exam Results

If you have taken MSP Practitioner, your exam will be sent to the examination board (Peoplecert) for marking and your results will be available in 7-10 working days.

Are there any sample exam papers?

Yes. As part of your Foundation and Practitioner training you will be given access to 2 full sample Foundation exam papers and 2 full sample Practitioner exam papers.

Will I receive any pre-course reading?

Yes. Approximately 3 weeks prior to the course start date you will receive the official Managing Successful Programmes manual and a pre-course reading list which instructs you which pages of the manual you should be familiar with prior to the course start date.

Are there any additional costs to the course price?

No. Everything is included in the course price. This includes your tuition, course materials, official Managing Successful Programmes manual, sample exams, pre-course study, exam fees and certification. If you’re doing a classroom-based training course at one of NILC’s venues, you’ll also receive unlimited tea, coffee, water and free Wi-Fi.

Where do I sit the MSP exams?

You take your paper-based MSP Foundation and/or Practitioner exams in the class during the course. Please note some providers send you home to sit the exam on a computer as they say it provides you with more flexibility however it is just to save the provider money.

Are there any prerequisites for MSP?

MSP Foundation

There are no formal prerequisites for this course, however it is recommended you have experience of managing or working in programmes prior to attending. Knowledge of the PRINCE2® project management method is advantageous but by no means mandatory, but some exposure to a project management method will aid understanding of how the programme works with these projects.

MSP Practitioner

You must hold a valid MSP Foundation qualification prior to sitting MSP Practitioner.

What version are your MSP courses?

All of NILC’s MSP courses follow the 2011 syllabus. This is the most up-to-date version of MSP currently available.

What happens if I fail a MSP exam?

If you fail to pass either of the MSP examinations, we will offer you support to give you the best opportunity to pass at the next attempt. Both Foundation and Practitioner exams can be sat on their own without having to retake the whole course (as long as you originally took the course with us). Don’t worry if you do fail one of the exams, they are designed to be a challenge – if everyone passed first time, then it wouldn’t signify a good exam.

Our high pass rates for both Foundation and Practitioner exams allows us to be confident that you will pass at the first attempt providing you complete the pre-course reading, attend the course every day, undertake the trial questions, and conduct the 1-2 hour daily homework during the course.

Do the MSP qualifications expire?

The Foundation examination does not have an expiry period.

Candidates who pass the Practitioner exam are recognized as a “MSP® Registered Practitioner” and candidates who pass the Advanced Practitioner exam are recognized as an “MSP Registered Advanced Practitioner”. Individuals will remain registered for a period of five calendar years.

To maintain their registered status, Registered Practitioners/Advanced Practitioners must complete and pass the MSP Re-Registration examination three to five calendar years after their initial/previous Practitioner or Advanced Practitioner certification.
